SEATTLE -- Christian Bergman provided a much-needed lift to the Mariners' injury-plagued rotation with a 7 1/3-inning gem on Wednesday, as Seattle rolled to a series-clinching 4-0 win over the A's at Safeco Field.
Making his second start since being recalled from Triple-A Tacoma, Bergman allowed just two hits and two walks, while striking out a career-best nine. The right-hander pitched the previous three seasons for the Rockies, and was making just his 17th Major League start.
"He survived spending some time at Coors Field," Mariners manager Scott Servais said. "And if you can get through there and still be breathing, it says a lot with the stuff he has and how he works. Huge shot in the arm for us. We've asked all our guys to just keep us in the game, and he did more than that tonight. He took over the game at a time we really needed it."

The A's never got a runner past first base, as they concluded a 1-5 road trip in quiet fashion. Jesse Hahn took the loss, allowing four runs (three earned) on five hits over five innings.
"Offensively, I don't know that we've looked much worse," A's manager Bob Melvin said. "Now, you have to give the pitcher some credit."

Seattle won its fifth straight home series, while improving to 12-6 at Safeco, compared to 7-16 on the road. The loss kept the A's in fifth place in the American League West at 17-23, a game and a half back of the Mariners.
MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
Segura keeps delivering: Mariners shortstop Jean Segura extended his career-best hitting streak to 16 games -- the longest active streak in the Majors -- with a two-run single up the middle that gave Seattle a 3-0 lead in the fifth. Hahn had retired eight in a row until walking Boog Powell and giving up a single to Guillermo Heredia to lead off the frame. Catcher Tuffy Gosewisch, batting .050, sacrificed the runners to second and third to set up Segura.
"He has a real knack for getting the barrel on the ball and hitting all kinds of pitches," Servais said of Segura. "Sometimes it gets him in trouble, because he thinks he can hit every pitch, but he has some kind of eye-hand coordination. He's fun to watch hit."

Outfield miscues cost A's : A pair of outfield misplays led to two of Seattle's runs, both on balls hit by Mariners right fielder Ben Gamel. In the first, Gamel laced a line drive to right that got past Matt Joyce to the wall for Gamel's first career triple. He then scored on Nelson Cruz's sacrifice fly. In the fifth, the Mariners scored an add-on run after Segura's two-run single when Gamel lofted a fly to left-center that was dropped by A's center fielder Mark Canha. That set up Cruz for an RBI groundout, his 36th run driven in this season, that made it 4-0.
"It was a line drive off the bat, and I thought I had a chance of catching it," Joyce said of Gamel's triple. "The ball had a lot of topspin, I got caught in between, and really just tried to keep it in front. It stayed down, and didn't hop up as much as I thought it would. It's a tough play."

"Those hurt," Melvin said. "When you're making errors in the outfield, it's usually more than one base. The first one ended up being a run. The second one, Mark's trying to be aggressive at a position he hasn't played a whole lot, and went a long way to get it, but sometimes it takes some time to figure out where your territory is."

ALONSO EXITS GAME
A's first baseman Yonder Alonso exited in the seventh inning with left knee soreness. It's unclear when Alonso suffered the injury, but he was lifted for pinch-hitter Rajai Davis in the top of the frame. Alonso does not believe the injury to be serious, but he will be re-evaluated in Oakland on Thursday. More >

A's: The A's return to Oakland for the start of a six-game homestand beginning Thursday, featuring a four-game series with the Red Sox and a two-game set against the Marlins. Right-hander Sonny Gray gets the nod in the 7:05 p.m. PT opener with Boston.
Mariners: Rookie right-hander Sam Gaviglio makes the first career start in Thursday's 7:10 p.m. PT series opener against the White Sox at Safeco Field. The 26-year-old from Ashland, Ore., allowed one run on one hit in two innings of relief in his big league debut Thursday in Toronto. He was 2-3 with a 3.31 ERA in five starts for Triple-A Tacoma.
