Reed fans career-high 10 for Hillsboro

D-backs No. 17 prospect Cody Reed posted his best performance of the year Monday, scattering three hits and notching a career-high 10 strikeouts in six shutout innings as Class A Short Season Hillsboro took down Everett, 2-1.

His outing was the first time he's thrown more than four innings without allowing a run at the professional level and the 19-year-old southpaw stands at 2-1 with a 2.11 ERA after four starts with the Hops.

Pitching coach Doug Drabek -- the 1990 National League Cy Young Award winner -- spoke highly of Reed after a tough start on July 1.

"Mentally he's fine," Drabek told MiLB.com. "He understands what's going on and realizes what he has to do. He won't be a guy that gets down on himself when he struggles. He's an upbeat kid, which bodes well for him, and I think his attitude will help him over the next few years."

Drafted No. 54 overall out of high school last summer, Reed certainly had a positive outlook after giving up six runs (four earned) in 5 1/3 innings against Eugene last week.

"The reality of my dreams are getting bigger and bigger every day," he told MiLB.com. "And now I'm in a position where I'll keep getting closer with every step I take."

Just 18 appearances into his career, Reed has 65 strikeouts against 31 hits and 18 walks. He went 0-2 with a 2.20 ERA in 11 starts across two levels last season and began this year with Hillsboro on June 20 by throwing four innings of no-hit ball.
