Drainage creates postgame issue for A's, Mariners
Players from both teams forced to hit the showers in Raiders' locker room
OAKLAND -- After the A's topped the Mariners on Sunday, 10-2, both teams had to deal with an immediate issue: Pipes on the clubhouse level of O.co Coliseum were backing up and flooding both teams' showers and the Mariners' training room.
As the media reached the clubhouse level for postgame interviews, players were rushing to the Raiders' locker room, where the squads showered together -- a first in equipment manager Steve Vucinich's 46-year tenure, he told the San Francisco Chronicle's Susan Slusser.
According to the players, raw sewage was coming up from the shower drains before they ran to the Raiders' upper-level locker room. The sewage also backed up into the umpires' room, bathrooms and the managers' offices.
Mariners manager Eric Wedge opted to conduct his postgame interview in the hallway because of the disturbance. He and the Mariners' coaching staff, as well as the umpires, left without showering.
The A's open a road trip Monday and do not return home until June 25, when the Reds come to town for a two-game series.
The team's lease at O.co Coliseum, which has been the organization's home since it moved to Oakland in 1968, expires at the end of the season. The facility was built in 1966.
