CarGo knocking on door of All-Star start

Rox outfielder climbs to fourth in voting; Tulo opens wide lead at short

WASHINGTON -- Rockies star outfielder Carlos Gonzalez has climbed to the cusp of the starting lineup for the National League for this year's All-Star Game.

Early in the process of fan voting for the starters, Gonzalez ranked 10th among NL outfielders. But according to Sunday's latest update, Gonzalez was fourth, one place out of the starting lineup.

Gonzalez -- who entered Sunday's play leading the National League in home runs (21), extra-base hits (46), total bases (181) and outfield assists (nine) -- has garnered 2,060,388 votes. He is closing in on the third-place candidate, the Nationals' Bryce Harper at 2,363,965 votes. Harper is on the disabled list with a knee injury. The top two outfielders in the voting are the Cardinals' Carlos Beltran with 3,473,030 and the Braves' Justin Upton with 2,453,531.

Meanwhile, Rockies shortstop Troy Tulowitzki is in the second week of a four-to-six-week absence with a rib injury, but he has opened a lead among shortstops -- 3,104,285 votes to 1,757,255 for the Giants' Brandon Crawford.

If elected, it would be the first time either Gonzalez or Tulowitzki was chosen a starter by the fans, even though Tulowitzki started the 2011 Midsummer Classsic because of an injury to Jose Reyes, then with the Mets, and Gonzalez started last year's as the designated hitter in Kansas City.

The Rockies' Michael Cuddyer does not show up among the top 15 in outfield voting despite the fact the 20-game hit streak he took into Sunday afternoon was the longest active streak in the Majors and tied for the longest one this season. Cuddyer entered Sunday's play fourth in the NL with a .332 batting average.

Fans can cast their votes for starters at MLB.com and all 30 club sites -- online or via a mobile device -- using the 2013 All-Star Game MLB.com Ballot until Thursday, July 4, at 9:59 p.m. MT.

During the Midsummer Classic, fans will vote exclusively online at MLB.com via the 2013 All-Star Game MLB.com MVP Vote, and their voice will represent 20 percent of the official vote determining the recipient of the Arch Ward Trophy.
