Corbin wins No. 5 rotation spot, Marte makes roster

PHOENIX -- There was little drama in the final roster decisions made by the D-backs on Saturday.

Patrick Corbin won the No. 5 spot in the rotation, while outfielder Alfredo Marte claimed the final position player slot.

Corbin outdueled Tyler Skaggs and Randall Delgado during the spring for the role. Skaggs was optioned out a couple of weeks ago, and Delgado was also sent to Triple-A Reno following Saturday's game.

Corbin was consistent throughout the spring, with only one shaky outing. He was 6-8 with a 4.54 ERA in 22 games (17 starts) for the D-backs last year.

"I thought he was really good," D-backs manager Kirk Gibson said. "He was very confident coming in. He was himself and worked on becoming a better pitcher himself."

A spot opened up for Marte after outfielders Adam Eaton and Cody Ross both went down with injuries this spring. The pair will open the season on the disabled list.

It became obvious that the job belonged to Marte, 24, when the D-backs reassigned the only other extra outfielder left on the roster, Tony Campana, on Friday. Marte had been optioned early in the spring, but the team brought him back when Eaton went down with an injury.

Marte hit .294 with 20 home runs and 75 RBIs for Double-A Mobile last year. He can play either corner outfield position, but is probably better suited for left.

"He swings the bat good, aggressive," Gibson said. "We like the way he swings the bat, for sure; got a little bit of sock in it."
