Corey Dickerson of the Colorado Rockies named the National League Player of the Week

Colorado Rockies left fielder Corey Dickerson has been named the National League Player of the Week for the period ending August 17th. The announcement was made earlier today on MLB Network.

Dickerson batted .393 (11-for-28) with four doubles, three home runs, 11 RBI and six runs scored in seven games to capture his first career weekly honor and the fourth for the Rockies this season, joining teammates Charlie Blackmon (4/7), Justin Morneau (4/21) and Troy Tulowitzki (5/5). Corey led all Major League hitters in RBI and total bases (24), and among his league mates he finished tied for first in doubles and homers, tied for third in hits and runs scored and was tied for ninth in batting average. The left-handed-hitting Dickerson is riding a career-best 12-game hitting streak heading into play today, batting .417 (20-for-48) with five doubles, one triple, four homers, 17 RBI and 11 runs scored over the stretch. More than halfway through the dog days of August, the 25-year-old leads the Senior Circuit in RBI (17), is tied for first in extra-base hits (10) and is third in slugging percentage (.639) for the month.

On Monday, the Mississippi native launched his first career three-run homer, a sixth-inning blast to give Colorado a 3-1 lead, but the power effort was not enough as the Rockies fell to the San Diego Padres, 4-3, at PETCO Park. A day later, Dickerson once again dialed long distance, this time calling up a solo shot in the ninth inning but Colorado was again topped by San Diego, 4-1. It was the Meridian Community College product's third homer in three days (also hitting a go-ahead two-run homer in the 10th inning of last Sunday's win against the Arizona Diamondbacks), marking the first time that the second-year veteran has homered in back-to-back-to-back tilts in his young career. In the opener of a four-game series against the Cincinnati Reds on Thursday, Dickerson doubled with a sacrifice fly and a run scored to help guide the Rockies past the Reds, 7-3, at Coors Field. After notching an RBI-double in a 3-2 loss to Cincinnati on Friday and having Saturday's contest between the two teams postponed due to a water main break outside of Coors Field, the Rockies' eighth-round draft choice in 2010 was back at it in the first game of a doubleheader on Sunday with a double, a homer, a walk, two runs scored and two RBI as Colorado edged the Reds, 10-9. In the nightcap, Dickerson went 2-for-5, including a double, three RBI and a run scored as the Rockies doubled up the Reds, 10-5, in Denver. In 10 career games against Cincinnati (nine starts), Dickerson his batting .410 (16-for-39) with seven doubles, one triple, four homers, 13 RBI and 11 runs scored.

Other noteworthy performances last week included Atlanta's Freddie Freeman (.375, 4 2B, 1 HR, 4 RBI) and Justin Upton (.364, 2 HR, 8 RBI); Miami's Giancarlo Stanton (.391, 3 HR, 9 RBI); Pittsburgh's Travis Snider (.423, 3 2B, 3 HR, 7 RBI); Milwaukee's Yovani Gallardo (1-0, 1.20 ERA, 15.0 IP, 1 BB, 9 SO); and Washington's Doug Fister (1-0, 0.00 ERA, 14.0 IP, 1 BB, 8 SO).
