Indians transfer Kluber to 60-day injured list

June 18th, 2019

ARLINGTON -- The Indians activated right-hander for his start on Monday night against the Rangers. In corresponding moves, Cleveland optioned left-hander Josh Smith to Triple-A Columbus and moved right-hander to the 60-day IL.

Kluber was struck in the right forearm by a 102.2 mph line drive in Miami on May 1 and was diagnosed with a fractured right ulna. He was cleared to begin strengthening activities last week, but there is no firm timeframe on when he’ll begin to throw again.

Smith logged five innings and struck out nine with a 5.40 ERA in six appearances for the Indians this season.

Indians don’t want to rush prospect Bradley

First baseman Bobby Bradley, ranked as the club's No. 6 prospect by MLB Pipeline, had gone deep five times in five games after a 3-for-4, two-homer game for Triple-A Columbus on Sunday. Tribe manager Terry Francona said he’s getting reports that Bradley’s defense and baserunning have improved, as well, but Francona said the club doesn’t necessarily want to rush the 23-year-old up to the Majors.

“Until somebody gets here, you don’t really know,” Francona said. “I’d probably err on the side of caution. Getting a guy beat up isn’t developing. I know guys get fidgety and there’s a lot more to read now about who’s going where and when, and all this, but allowing a guy to play and be successful is never bad.”

Still, Bradley’s time with the Major League club could come any day now if there’s an imminent need, Francona said.

“We could have a hamstring [injury] tonight and he could be here tomorrow,” Francona said. “I’m just saying, it’s not a bad thing to let a guy play and succeed.”
