LOS ANGELES -- Corey Seager was named the National League Rookie of the Month for June, adding a trophy to go with what has been a monster stretch for the young shortstop.
Seager hit .343/.409/.676 with eight doubles and eight home runs while starting at shortstop in 26 of the Dodgers' 28 games. In total, he led all Major League rookies in hits, runs, home runs, total bases and slugging.
His 14-game hitting streak, started on June 16 and extended in Friday's 5-0 win over the Rockies, is the longest active streak in the Majors and a new career high.
"With Corey, it doesn't even seem like any type of hitting streak, or play any better than he was earlier," manager Dave Roberts said. "It's more the fact that this is who he is. He's a guy that likes to play, he squares the baseball up, and he finds a way to hit the outfield grass and sometimes the stands. It's not that he's hot, it's what Corey Seager is."
It's the first career monthly award for the 22-year-old and the first for a Dodgers rookie since Alex Guerrero last April. It might not be the last honor for Seager either, as his .302/.360/.540 line on the season heading into play Saturday has made him a frontrunner for the National League Rookie of the Year award.
Other rookies who received votes this month were Colorado's Trevor Story, Milwaukee's Zach Davies, Atlanta's Dario Alvarez and St. Louis' Aledmys Diaz.
Padres first baseman Wil Myers and Cubs southpaw Jon Lester won the other two monthly awards in the NL.
