Craig's homer, initially ruled in play, overturned

ST. LOUIS -- Having already connected for a pair of doubles, Allen Craig added a home run to his Wednesday afternoon showing -- though not without the assistance of the instant replay review system.

Craig cranked a 3-2 pitch from Brewers reliever Wei-Chung Wang to deep left center leading off the sixth. The ball bounced off a metal railing beyond the outfield wall but was initially signaled in play by second-base umpire Toby Basner, who believed the ball caromed off the padded portion of the wall.

Busch Stadium began setting off fireworks -- a routine occurrence when the Cardinals hit a home run -- but stopped prematurely as everyone realized the on-field ruling. Craig stopped at third, manager Mike Matheny asked the umpires to check the hit on replay, and almost immediately the call was overturned.

Craig finished his trot around the bases to put the Cardinals up, 9-3.

Matheny did not invoke a challenge on the play, as home run calls are still reviewable only at the umpires' discretion, as they have been for the past few seasons.
