Crisp sits out game after wall-crashing effort

ANAHEIM -- As expected, after crashing into the wall on a sacrificial effort to rob a homer in Friday's loss, the A's Coco Crisp was held out of Saturday's game against the Halos and remains day to day with a strained neck.

Manager Bob Melvin said Crisp was "a little stiff" Saturday and not expected to be available off the bench. With a day game Sunday to close out this four-game set, it seems likely he sits for that one, too.

As happens in Crisp's absence, the A's lineup underwent a bit of a makeover Saturday, with Sam Fuld assuming leadoff duties. Stephen Vogt made his eighth start of the season in the second spot. Craig Gentry replaced Crisp in center field.

Crisp, who has battled neck issues since May, has started only 91 of the club's 135 games and just 80 in the outfield. He said after Friday's game he's tried to dial his intense play back some to stay on the field.

"But in a game like that, when it's 0-0," said Melvin, "you're looking at a play like that, that's the only way he knows how to play. You have to live with that."

The A's are already without several key players but could get shortstop Jed Lowrie back as soon as Monday. That's also when catcher John Jaso (concussion symptoms) could begin resuming baseball activity, Melvin said. Closer Sean Doolittle (intercostal strain) is showing encouraging progress in his rehab, too.
