Cubs activate RHP Pedro Strop from disabled list and LHP Wesley Wright from paternity leave list

The Chicago Cubs today activated right-handed pitcher Pedro Strop from the 15-day disabled list and activated left-handed pitcher Wesley Wright from the paternity leave list. Additionally, right-handed pitcher Hector Rondon has been placed on the paternity leave list and right-handed pitcher Blake Parker was yesterday optioned to Triple-A Iowa.

Strop, 28, landed on the disabled list, May 7, with a left groin strain. He is 0-2 with one save and a 4.97 ERA (7 ER/12.2 IP) in 15 relief appearances for Chicago this season. Strop has held the opponent scoreless in 11 of 15 games, walked eight and struck out 15, good for an average of 10.7 strikeouts per 9.0 innings pitched. He is limiting the opponent to a .234 batting average (11-for-47).

Strop owns a 9-10 career record with five saves and a 3.94 ERA (77 ER/176.0 IP) in 196 major league relief appearances with Texas (2009-11), Baltimore (2011-13) and the Cubs (2013-14). He has averaged 9.2 strikeouts per 9.0 innings (180 strikeouts in 176.0 innings) and has held the opposition to a .225 batting average. He was acquired by Chicago July 2 of last year with pitcher Jake Arrieta and two international signing bonus slots from Baltimore for pitcher Scott Feldman and catcher Steve Clevenger.

Wright, 29, was placed on the paternity leave list on Tuesday for the birth of his daughter, Harlem Rose Wright. He is 0-1 with a 3.18 ERA (6 ER/17.0 IP) in 18 relief appearances in his first season with the Cubs, walking six and striking out 14. He has surrendered just one home run and limited the opposition to a .227 batting average (15-for-66), including a .154 average (6-for-39) against right-handed hitters.

Wright is 10-16 with two saves and a 4.29 ERA (128 ER/268.1 IP) in 320 career games, all but four in relief, with Houston (2008-13), Tampa Bay (2013) and the Cubs. He has averaged nearly one strikeout every inning, fanning 267 batters in 268.1 innings, walking 119 and surrendering 36 home runs. Wright appeared in a career-high 77 games with Houston in 2012, and made 70 appearances between the Astros and Rays last season.

Rondon, 26, is 0-1 with six saves and a 1.59 ERA (4 ER/22.2 IP) in 22 relief appearances for the Cubs this season, walking eight and striking out 25.

Parker, 28, has appeared in three games spanning two stints with the Cubs this season, allowing three runs in 2.2 innings. He has spent the majority of the season with Iowa, turning in a 0.77 ERA (1 ER/11.2 IP) with eight saves.
