Baez slowed by foul ball to face on rehab stint

Cubs infielder won't be ready for home opener Monday

PHOENIX -- The Cubs' Javier Baez, on the disabled list with a left thumb contusion, had a minor setback this week but it was not because of his hand. Baez took a foul ball off his face during an intrasquad game at the Cubs' complex in Mesa earlier this week.
"We don't think it's anything bad but he just got 'brimmed,'" Cubs manager Joe Maddon said of the ball that apparently hit Baez on the brim of his cap.
The Cubs thought Baez might be activated from the disabled list in time for the home opener on Monday but Maddon said that's doubtful. Baez has made progress as far as his thumb injury, which he sustained sliding into second base, but still needs to see more game action before he's ready to be activated, Maddon said.
