CHICAGO -- The Cubs added another left-handed pitcher to their inventory, claiming David Rollins off waivers from the Mariners on Friday.
Rollins, 26, spent most of the 2016 season at Triple-A Tacoma, where he was 5-0 with two saves and a 3.77 ERA in 37 relief appearances. He walked six over 45 1/3 innings, also holding opponents to a .236 batting average. He made 11 relief appearances for the Mariners, going 1-0 but allowing eight runs over 9 1/3 innings for a 7.71 ERA.
The Mariners selected Rollins from the Astros in the 2014 Rule 5 Draft, but he began the 2015 season on the restricted list to serve an 80-game suspension for violating MLB's Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program. He eventually made his big league debut with the Mariners in 2015, finishing with 20 appearances.
When suspended, Rollins issued a statement, saying the positive test was "the result of a serious error in judgment" and vowed it would never happen again.
This year, Rollins received the Mariners' Dan Wilson Minor League Community Service Award for his involvement with children at Seattle area hospitals.
With the addition of Rollins, the Cubs' 40-man roster is at 35.
