PHOENIX -- Dexter Fowler's right hip still hurts from colliding with Kyle Schwarber Thursday night, but it hasn't stopped the Cubs' leadoff man from continuing to get on base.
"I felt like I got in a car crash," Fowler said of the collision in which Schwarber suffered two ligament tears. "That's a big man over there."
Fowler, though, is still playing. Schwarber is done for the season, and will undergo surgery sometime in the next three weeks to repair a torn ACL and LCL in his left knee.
"He's a big part of our team -- he's like my little brother over there," Fowler said. "Any time a guy goes down, you wish him the best and, hopefully, it's nothing serious. Obviously, it was. You wish him a speedy recovery and keep praying for him."
Neither Fowler or Schwarber called for the ball, because, as Fowler said, you only call for it if you think you can catch it.
"I saw him out of the corner of my eye when I dove, but at that point it was too late," Fowler said.
Fowler walked in the fourth and singled in the ninth inning of Saturday night's 4-2 win over the D-backs, and now has been on base in 15 of his 24 plate appearances. He began Saturday leading the National League in on-base percentage.
"He's really motivated," manager Joe Maddon said of Fowler, who rejected the Cubs qualifying offer last November, but eventually signed a one-year deal in February. "I'm certain after this past offseason, having to go out there and test the waters [in free agency] ... He's a man on the mission."
Worth noting
• With Schwarber sidelined, Jorge Soler could get more playing time in left field. The Cubs can mix and match, inserting Matt Szczur, Kris Bryant or Ben Zobrist in left as well.
"You saw what he did last year in the playoffs," Maddon said of Soler, who batted .474 in seven postseason games. "It's there. If he wants to take it and run with it, it's there for him to do it."
• New Cubs reliever Adam Warren has yet to pitch in a game, and Maddon said he would try to get the right-hander some innings. Maddon passed the right-hander on the way to the field Saturday.
"I asked him if he was rested," Maddon said.
• Dillon Maples, 23, who was a 14th-round pick in the 2011 Draft, was placed on the 7-day disabled list by Class A Advanced Myrtle Beach. Maples had appeared in one game, and pitched only one-third of an inning.
