Cubs have confidence in Coghlan as leadoff man

CINCINNATI -- The Cubs have been looking for a leadoff man since Emilio Bonifacio was injured, and Chris Coghlan seems to be filling that role well.

Coghlan posted his eighth career four-hit game Monday, and he led off again Tuesday for the Cubs in the first game of a day-night doubleheader against the Reds.

So far, Coghlan is 11-for-49 (.224) batting first this season, but Cubs manager Rick Renteria has seen encouraging signs.

"As a whole, his at-bats have been really good," Renteria said. "He's not going to get four hits every night, but his at-bats have been good. As a byproduct, he's getting pitches he can handle and he's seeing the ball well. He's used that slot and kind of taken off a little bit."

Bonifacio has been sidelined since June 13 with a right oblique strain, and he has been rehabbing in Mesa, Ariz. There was no timetable for his return.
