NEW YORK -- Cubs pitcher Kyle Hendricks (eighth-round pick in 2011 out of Dartmouth) will throw Tuesday for the first time since going on the disabled list with inflammation in the back of his right hand.
Hendricks was placed on the disabled list Thursday, retroactive to June 5, and the Cubs hope he will be available for the weekend series against the Pirates. However, that's still to be determined.
"I have to see how it goes [Tuesday]," Hendricks said on Monday. "There hasn't been much [activity]. It's just been sitting in the trainer's room up until today. I have to test it first and see how it feels, and then we'll have an idea as to when I can come back."
"We'll let him [throw Tuesday] and find out how he feels after that," Cubs manager Joe Maddon said.
Hendricks said his hand has definitely gotten better since he first felt it June 5, the day after his last start.
"They want to have it pain-free or as close to pain-free as possible for the first throwing, and we're right there or really close to that," Hendricks said. "Hopefully, I can throw [Tuesday] and test it and see how it feels."
Jacob Arrieta (fifth-round pick in 2007 out of TCU) has been bothered by a cut on his right thumb, and the Cubs are dealing with that by having the right-hander do less work on the side between starts.

"It just comes from throwing," Maddon said of Arrieta's cut. "It's not like he's been cut by a knife. It's when your skin splits a little bit.
"[The injury is] annoying. It causes you to try to do something differently. Whenever you try to do that when you're releasing a baseball it's normally not a good thing. We're keeping an eye on it. He showed it to me. I don't have an answer yet other than we're trying to back off between starts."
The Cubs moved lefty Mike Montgomery (36th overall pick in 2008 out of William S. Hart High School) into the rotation to sub for Hendricks last Friday against the Rockies. The team has an off-day on Thursday and may be able to go without a fifth starter.
