Cubs recall OF Matt Szczur from Triple-A Iowa, option C Kyle Schwarber to Triple-A

CHICAGO - The Chicago Cubs today recalled outfielder Matt Szczur from Triple-A Iowa. Catcher Kyle Schwarber was optioned to Triple-A Iowa after yesterday's game.

Szczur will be available for the Cubs tonight as they begin a four-game series against the Los Angeles Dodgers at Wrigley Field.

The 25-year-old Szczur joins the Cubs for the fourth time this season, as he was a member of Chicago's Opening Day roster until April 19, was with the club from May 6-15 and again from June 2-6. He is batting .167 (6-for-36) with two doubles and six RBI in 23 games with the Cubs this season. With Iowa, Szczur has batted .287 (37-for-129) with six doubles, two triples, four home runs and 18 RBI in 36 games this season.

Szczur made his major league debut with the Cubs last August and batted .226 (14-for-62) with two doubles, two home runs and five RBI in 33 games. He has played 23 games in left field, 10 games in center field and 14 games in right field during his big league career. Overall, Szczur has batted .204 (20-for-98) with four doubles, two home runs and 11 RBI in 56 career major league games.

Schwarber, 22, batted .364 (8-for-22) with one triple, one home run and six RBI in six games with the Cubs. He will report to Iowa and play at the Triple-A level for the first time. Schwarber batted .320 (63-for-197) with 10 doubles, one triple, 13 home runs and 39 RBI in 58 games with Double-A Tennessee to earn Southern League All-Star honors.
