Veras looking forward to pitching for Cubs

CHICAGO -- The Cubs have reportedly signed veteran right-handed reliever Jose Veras to a one-year, $4 million contract with a $5.5 million option for 2015, although the deal is pending a physical.

ESPN Deportes' Enrique Rojas first reported the deal Tuesday, saying it included several incentives. The Cubs have not confirmed the deal. Veras told MLB.com's Brian McTaggart that he was looking forward to pitching for Chicago.

"There's a lot of good talent, good guys on that team," Veras said. "Hopefully, we'll see it's going to be good. Maybe it's the same situation as Houston with the Latin guys being young guys who had a lot of talent. I still have to do my job anyway."

Veras, 33, was signed by the Astros a year ago and then traded midseason to Detroit. He wanted to return to Houston but he never got the deal he wanted and turned down an offer last week. He was a strong presence in the Astros' young clubhouse, especially among the Latin players, and even once called a team meeting.

The right-hander has pitched for the Yankees, Indians, Marlins, Pirates, Brewers, Astros and Tigers, compiling a career 3.84 ERA with 26 saves in 42 opportunities. Last season, the right-hander totaled a career-high 21 saves in 25 opportunities with the Astros and Tigers combined. He was Houston's closer before being dealt to Detroit in July for two players. Veras was used more in a setup role with the Tigers.

The Cubs are in the market for a closer and Veras could compete for that job.
