Cubs select the contract of RHP Blake Parker, place RHP Rafael Dolis on 15-day disabled list

Righthander Alex Burnett designated for assignment

The Chicago Cubs today selected the contract of right-handed pitcher Blake Parker from Triple-A Iowa and placed right-handed pitcher Rafael Dolis on the 15-day disabled list (retroactive to May 27) with a mild right forearm strain. To make room for Parker on the 40-man roster, right-handed pitcher Alex Burnett was designated for assignment.

Parker, who will wear uniform number 50, will be available for the Cubs tonight against the Arizona Diamondbacks at Wrigley Field.

Parker, 27, is 0-1 with seven saves and a 2.04 ERA (4 ER/17.2 IP) in 16 relief appearances with Iowa this season. He has limited opponents to a .133 batting average (8-for-60), including a .067 mark (2-for-30) against right-handed hitters. Parker has struck out 26 batters in 17.2 innings pitched, an average of 13.2 strikeouts per nine innings, and has pitched to a 1.04 ERA (1 ER/8.2 IP) in his last nine outings. Earlier this season, he became Iowa's all-time saves leader, a mark that currently stands at 41 saves.

The 6-foot-3, 225-pound righthander made his major league debut with the Cubs last season, posting no record and a 6.00 ERA (4 ER/6.0 IP) in seven relief appearances. Parker joined the Cubs on May 17 and recorded a 0.00 ERA (4.1 IP) through four outings before landing on the disabled list with a stress reaction in his right elbow. He returned in late August to make three appearances before returning to the disabled list on September 7 for the rest of the season.

Parker was originally selected by the Cubs in the 16th round of the 2006 Draft. He is 14-17 with 66 saves and a 2.98 ERA (114 ER/344.1 IP) in 257 minor league appearances, all in relief.

Dolis, 25, has no record and a 0.00 ERA (5.0 IP) in five appearances covering three stints with the Cubs this season.

Burnett, 25, was claimed off waivers from Baltimore on Monday and tossed a scoreless ninth inning Wednesday in his Cubs debut. He was optioned to Iowa the next day.
