Cubs select the contract of RHP Eduardo Sanchez

SAN FRANCISCO - The Chicago Cubs today selected the contract of right-handed pitcher Eduardo Sanchez from Triple-A Iowa. 

Sanchez, 24, will wear uniform number 52 and be available for the Cubs tonight against the San Francisco Giants at AT&T Park.

Sanchez was claimed off waivers from the St. Louis Cardinals on May 21 and has combined to go 1-1 with one save and a 3.71 ERA (14 ER/34.0 IP) in 28 relief appearances between Triple-A Iowa and Memphis. Since joining Iowa, Sanchez has limited opponents to a .195 batting average against, including a .152 mark by right-handed hitters, and has not allowed a home run in 24.1 innings pitched. He has gone 1-0 with a 1.50 ERA (2 ER/12.0 IP) and a .167 batting average against in his last 10 outings beginning June 28.

The righthander has spent part of the last two seasons in the big leagues with the Cardinals (2011-12), combining to go 3-2 with five saves and a 3.40 ERA (17 ER/45.0 IP) in 43 relief appearances. He has struck out 48 batters in 45.0 major league innings while limiting opponents to a .166 batting average (25-for-151). Sanchez has also limited big league hitters to a .310 on-base percentage and a .265 slugging percentage, only a .575 OPS. 

Sanchez made his major league debut in 2011 and went 3-1 with five saves and a 1.80 ERA (6 ER/30.0 IP) in 26 relief appearances. He also split the 2012 season between the majors and minors, going 0-1 with a 6.60 ERA (11 ER/15.0 IP) in 17 outings with St. Louis.

In all or part of eight minor league seasons, Sanchez has gone 15-12 with 46 saves and a 3.47 ERA (118 ER/306.0 IP) in 235 appearances, all but seven in relief.
