Olt congratulates former teammate Springer

NEW YORK -- Cubs third baseman Mike Olt was excited to hear that Astros prospect George Springer, his former college teammate at the University of Connecticut, would be joining him in the Majors Leagues.

Olt was one year ahead of Springer at UConn -- he was selected in the supplemental first round of the 2010 First-Year Player Draft, while Springer was the No. 11 pick in the 2011 Draft -- and the pair rank among the top five in school history in several offensive categories, including home runs.

Olt said he didn't text Springer because he didn't want his pal to feel an obligation to respond on such a busy day, so he instead sent a welcoming tweet, "Big congrats to @gspringer_4 for the callup. Knew from the first scrimmage at Uconn, he was going to be special #legkick #HuskyNation"

"I know what he's going through today," said Olt, who was first called up by the Rangers in 2012. "It's an overwhelming experience. We'll definitely catch up soon.

"I'm sure he had a night game last night and probably didn't get any sleep. There's just a lot on his mind and definitely a lot of nerves going on. He'll be busy the next couple of days, which is awesome."
