The Arizona Diamondbacks agreed to terms with INF Eduardo Escobar (@escobarmaracay) on a 3-year contract through the 2021 season.

Escobar, 29, established career highs in home runs (23), doubles (48), walks (52), runs scored (75), RBI (84), games (151), hits (154), total bases (277) and at-bats (566) while hitting .272 in 151 combined games with the D-backs and Minnesota Twins in 2018. He led all switch-hitters in doubles, ranked third in average and slugging pct. (.489), fourth in OPS (.824), fifth in RBI and hits and tied for eighth in home runs. Overall, his 48 doubles ranked second in the Majors behind Alex Bregman/HOU (51) and were tied for ninth most all-time in a season by a switch hitter.

Escobar, who was acquired from the Twins on July 27 RHP Jhoan Durán, OF Ernie De La Trinidad and OF Gabriel Maciel, appeared in 131 games at third base (124 starts), 21 games at shortstop (20 starts) and 1 at second (1 start). He led all third basemen with a .983 fielding pct. (5 E in 299 TC), the best fielding mark at that position since Placido Polanco/MIA in 2013 (.990).

Since 2014, Escobar ranks among the Major League switch-hitting leaders in doubles (6th, 144) and extra-base hits (7th, 228). He has recorded 30 or more doubles 3 times in the last 5 seasons, 1 of 6 Major League switch-hitters to accomplish that feat, joining Melky Cabrera (4), Asdrúbal Cabrera (4), José Ramírez (3), Francisco Lindor (3) and Ben Zobrist (3). Escobar was named the Twins' 2018 nominee for the Major League Baseball Players Alumni Association's Heart and Hustle Award, and was 1 of 6 finalists for the 2017 Marvin Miller Man of the Year Award, given annually to the player whose on-field performance and contributions to his community inspire others to higher levels of achievement.

Escobar is a career .257 (648-for-2520)/.308 OBP/.417 SLG hitter with 153 doubles, 19 triples, 71 home runs, 308 RBI, 180 walks and 310 runs scored in 770 games over parts of 8 Major League seasons with the Chicago White Sox (2011-12), Twins (2012-18) and D-backs (2018). He has made an appearance at every defensive position except first base, including 328 at shortstop, 311 at third base, 59 at second base, 43 in left field and 1 in right field, center field, catcher and pitcher. He was originally signed by the White Sox as a non-drafted free agent on January 28, 2006 and was traded to Minnesota on July 28, 2012 for LHP Francisco Liriano.
