The Arizona Diamondbacks (@Dbacks) have agreed to terms with C Jeff Mathis (@JMathSix) on a two-year contract, as announced by D-backs Executive Vice President & General Manager Mike Hazen.
"With Jeff, we're getting a plus defender, game-caller and teammate," Hazen said. "His veteran leadership on and off the field will be very valuable in the development of the young core of our club."
Mathis, 33, has appeared in 707 games over parts of 12 Major League seasons with the Angels (2005-11), Blue Jays (2012) and Marlins (2013-16).
Since making his debut in 2005, pitchers have combined for a 3.78 ERA when throwing to Mathis, the fifth-best mark among active catchers in that time, trailing Buster Posey (3.50), Yadier Molina (3.61), Russell Martin (3.67) and Salvador Perez (3.71) [min 5,000.0 IP]. He also ranks among the league catching leaders in pickoffs (T-2nd, 19) and defensive runs saved (7th, 35) in that time.
