PHOENIX -- Thanks to a three-run homer by Welington Castillo, the D-backs ended a pair of losing streaks Saturday night as they beat the Giants, 6-5, at Chase Field. It snapped a six-game skid overall and five-game home losing streak against the Giants this year.
The Giants seemed to be on the way to another win as they built a 5-3 lead behind the pitching of Jeff Samardzija. Things changed quickly in the eighth when the San Francisco bullpen struggled. Josh Osich walked the only batter he faced to put runners on first and second, and Castillo then hit a 2-1 offering from Hunter Strickland into the seats in left to give the D-backs the lead.
"It's definitely exciting," D-backs first baseman Paul Goldschmidt said. "Welly did a great job right there; he got a good pitch and hit it and got it out of here. You knew he hit it good and you're just watching it to see if it left the yard, and it did."
The Giants scored three unearned runs in the second thanks to a throwing error by shortstop Jean Segura and received back-to-back homers in the fourth by Brandon Crawford and Mac Williamson off D-backs starter Patrick Corbin.
MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
Clutch vs. Giants: The homer by Castillo was his second go-ahead homer hit in the seventh inning or later this year, and both of them have come against the Giants. Castillo also homered April 20 off Madison Bumgarner at AT&T Park to help give the D-backs a 2-1 win.

"I've faced him a couple of times and I know he has a really good fastball and a good slider," Castillo said of Strickland. "I was just waiting for something over the plate and close to me that I could put a good swing on." More »
Back-to-back:The Giants scored three unearned runs in the second inning, but there was nothing cheap about consecutive fourth-inning homers by Crawford and Williamson. Crawford went the opposite way into the left-field seats for his eighth homer of the season, then Williamson followed with a blast well above the yellow line in center field that Statcast™ projected to travel 460 feet.

"Mac crushed it," Samardzija said. "That was a good matchup for him. He's swinging it well. I like how we're hitting the ball. It's exciting to watch."
Gold standard: Goldschmidt made a pair of diving plays at first that probably saved at least one run. In the eighth, he dove toward the line to rob Angel Pagan of a leadoff double. One batter later, Buster Posey doubled to right, which would have scored Pagan. And then in the ninth with a runner on first and two outs, he made a diving play toward the hole to rob Conor Gillaspie of a single.
"Made a couple plays tonight to save us," D-backs manager Chip Hale said. "Even if that ball ekes through, we have the lead but you want to get the game over with right there, so it was a great play."

Time for a breather: Samardzija already had given up two fourth-inning runs and just allowed a long double off the center-field wall by Chris Herrmann when a review was called for on Herrmann's drive. Samardzija settled down after the review -- which confirmed the original call -- got three outs to escape further damage in that inning and retired 13 of the 15 hitters he faced after that point.
"I think that might have given him some time to regain his concentration, his poise," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. "That might have helped him there." More »

TAKE A HIKE
Hale was ejected by home-plate umpire Brian Knight after the bottom of the sixth inning. Hale had been barking at Knight from the dugout after Herrmann was called out on strikes for the second out of the sixth. The ejection was the fourth of Hale's managerial career and his second this season.
"It's one of those things -- you can't argue balls and strikes, so that's the way it works," was all Hale would say about his discussion with Knight.

Giants: The three-game series in Chase Field concludes Sunday with a 1:10 pm PT game. RIght-hander Albert Suarez will make his sixth start and 12th appearance.
D-backs:Robbie Ray will start Sunday afternoon when the D-backs conclude their three-game series with the Giants with a 1:10 p.m. MST first pitch. Ray tossed six shutout innings against the Giants at AT&T Park earlier this year.
