PHOENIX -- Going up against one of the best young starting pitchers in baseball, the D-backs decided they would mix-and-match with a bullpen game to fill the hole created when starter Taijuan Walker went on the disabled list with a blister.
Like just about everything else this season, it worked out just fine for the D-backs, who completed a three-game sweep over the White Sox with an 8-6 win Wednesday afternoon at Chase Field.
Randall Delgado got the start -- his first since 2015, when he made one spot start -- and he gave the D-backs the four innings they hoped for while allowing just two runs (one earned).
"I think I did pretty well," Delgado said. "I was trying to concentrate and do my stuff trying to help the team with everything. The team played awesome again."

Delgado was followed to the mound by Andrew Chafin, Tom Wilhelmsen, Jorge De La Rosa, J.J. Hoover and, finally, Fernando Rodney.
"All and all, those are the types of games that build a lot of camaraderie," D-backs manager Torey Lovullo said. "And a lot of teamwork went on today. It was a really nice game for us."
Said D-backs third baseman Jake Lamb, "For Randy to give us what he did at the beginning of the game, just everyone, really, coming in doing their job. They got in a few sticky situations, but got out of it and Rodney comes in and does his thing."

Wilhelmsen and De La Rosa were touched for two runs apiece, and for the second straight day Hoover came in with at least one runner on base, this time in the seventh, and managed the situation.
"We patched it together with the bullpen," Lovullo said. "Once again I thought J.J. Hoover did a great job of giving us an extended outing, one-plus in a crucial part of their order and a crucial part of the game."
Perhaps most importantly, because the bullpen has not been overworked to this point in the season, the innings the relievers ate on Wednesday helped the team avoid making a roster move to bring up a fresh arm from the Minors.

That's key, because Arizona is headed out now on an 11-game road trip and is six games into a stretch of 17 days in a row without a break.
"I think we're going to be in good shape," Lovullo said. "[Delgado] did exactly what we wanted him to do."
