PHOENIX -- The D-backs placed outfielder Rickie Weeks Jr. on the bereavement list Tuesday and called up catcher Tuffy Gosewisch from Triple-A Reno to take his spot on the roster.
Weeks is expected to rejoin the team Sunday.
Gosewisch was one of the team's final cuts at the end of Spring Training, and he was hitting .342 with nine homers and 26 RBIs in 58 games for Reno.
"It was very hard the first few days," Gosewisch said of not making the team. "I had to get it out, though; I had to let myself feel what I was feeling and then I just tried to go about my business the way I do every other day. When I come to the field, I'm doing the same thing no matter where I'm at. I'm just trying to get better each day and learn something each day and make myself and my teammates better."
Calling up Gosewisch frees up manager Chip Hale to play backup catcher Chris Herrmann in the outfield. With Chris Owings and David Peralta on the disabled list, Herrmann is the team's backup center fielder. Friday he got the start in right field, and he could see more time out there if Gosewisch stays on the roster.
Worth noting
• Peralta swung a bat for the first time Friday since being placed on the 15-day DL with a strained lower back.
Peralta hit off the tee and will do so again Saturday while adding in some flips. Then he will take Sunday off before taking regular batting practice in the cage Monday.
• Right-hander Rubby De La Rosa (right elbow inflammation) played catch from 75 feet Friday. He will do that one more time and then progress to 90 feet and 120 feet and then throw a flat-ground bullpen session.
It will likely be a few weeks before he begins throwing off a mound.
• Hale talked to National League All-Star manager Terry Collins recently to make an All-Star case for first baseman Paul Goldschmidt, third baseman Jake Lamb, second baseman Jean Segura and right-handers Zack Greinke and Brad Ziegler.
"Just told him the guys I thought deserved it, and he said they were all on his list to look at," Hale said.
