Owings placed on DL with plantar fasciitis

June 12th, 2016

PHOENIX -- The D-backs placed outfielder Chris Owings (plantar fasciitis in his left foot) on the 15-day disabled list on Saturday, retroactive to June 6.
Owings exited the June 5 game against the Cubs with soreness in his left foot. He had been getting his right foot treated all season for a similar pain, but it flared up in his left last weekend.
"We've just kind of been staying away from it for the past couple days, hoping that it would turn the corner, but it's kind of stayed the same," Owings said. "I'm just going to take these next couple days and just try to let it calm down even a little bit more, that way it's not an issue the rest of the season."
It's not a new issue for Owings. He was limited to 62 games in 2010 when he had plantar fasciitis in both feet.
"I know the symptoms, I know how it feels," Owings said. "Just trying to catch it right now before it's something where it's nagging the rest of the season."
Owings has proved to be versatile for Arizona this season. He took over the starting spot in center field after A.J. Pollock suffered a fractured elbow in an exhibition game on April 1.
In 54 games, Owings is batting .285. The 24-year-old has 10 doubles, four triples, two home runs, 18 RBIs, and is 8-for-8 in stolen-base attempts.
"We want to get him to be 100 percent, that's all," D-backs manager Chip Hale said. "It just gives other guys opportunities to play though, that's the way you have to look at it."
Arizona will rely on veteran Michael Bourn and David Peralta to play center in Owings' absence.
Owings' move to the DL made room on the active roster for the D-backs to recall right-hander Zack Godley to start Saturday's game against the Marlins.
