Owings taking time to rest ailing left foot

June 8th, 2016

PHOENIX -- D-backs outfielder Chris Owings said he has been dealing with right foot soreness all season. But during Sunday's game against the Cubs, it was his left foot that flared up.
Owings was out of the lineup for the second straight day for Tuesday's game with the Rays as the D-backs continue to monitor and treat their starting center fielder.
"We've done a really good job of just maintaining it and the trainers have done a great job of just keeping it where it's at," Owings said. "Just trying to take a couple steps to make sure it doesn't escalate to where it gets really bad, so just trying to be a little smart about it and just try to take these couple days and put some pressure on it."
Arizona manager Chip Hale said Owings' status is day to day as he deals with plantar fasciitis, inflamed tissue in the bottom of the foot that causes heel pain.
"We have to be very careful," Hale said. "He's going to be available; he'll be taped up and available to hit for us or, if we have to, have him go out and play defense. We'd rather, if we can, stay away from him, but he's been a good bat for us, so if late in the game we need him, we'll use him."
Owings took over the starting center-field role after A.J. Pollock suffered a fractured right elbow in an exhibition game April 1. Owings entered Tuesday batting .285/.340/.419 with a pair of home runs and 18 RBIs, while also going 8-for-8 on stolen-base attempts.
The D-backs currently have six outfielders on their active roster, so filling in for Owings shouldn't be an issue. David Peralta was activated from the disabled list Monday and Michael Bourn has shined defensively.
However, the outfield depth doesn't change the fact that Owings wants to return to the starting lineup as soon as possible.
"I definitely wish I could be out there," Owings said. "But maybe take a couple days and hopefully it's not something where I'm missing more time because of it."
• Starter Shelby Miller (right index finger sprain) will make a rehab start for Class A Advanced Visalia on Thursday. Miller (1-6, 7.09 ERA) has been on the DL since May 27.
• Starter Rubby De La Rosa (right UCL sprain) will not need additional surgery on his right elbow, the same one he had Tommy John surgery on in 2011. The D-backs consulted Dr. James Andrews. Hale said he hopes to have the right-hander back before the last two months of the season.
