PHOENIX -- Daniel Descalso hit a two-run homer off Rockies reliever Jordan Lyles giving the D-backs a 2-0, 13-inning win on Sunday to avoid a sweep of the three-game series and ending the longest scoreless tie in Chase Field history. It was his first career walk-off homer.
The D-backs had a number of chances to win in extra innings, but finally did so after Brandon Drury opened the final inning with an infield hit.
"I'm just glad I gave us a chance to get the win," Descalso said. "I'm not trying to hit a home run there on an 0-2 count, but he made a pitch out over the plate. I put a good swing on it and it ended up being the game-winner."
Lyles had escaped loaded bases in the 12th by working Jake Lamb into a ground ball, but lamented an 0-2 slider to Descalso, who played for the Rockies 2015-2016.

"You can't let that happen," Lyles said. "I've got to throw my slider next time better. That's a tough way for a game to end, to come down to one bad pitch by me. Our guys fought a lot of innings."
Both starters, left-hander Patrick Corbin for the D-backs and right-hander German Marquez for the Rockies, were superlative, matching zeroes into the seventh inning before coming out with the game scoreless.
Corbin was lifted after retiring the first batter in the seventh having allowed two hits, walking two and striking out six. Marquez, making only his fifth big-league start, pitched six innings and allowed six hits while walking one batter intentionally and whiffing eight.

And then the bullpens took over.
MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
Rox jam sacks, to no avail: Colorado loaded the bases in the fifth with none out on a pair of Corbin walks sandwiched around an Ian Desmond base hit. That was the extent of it as Corbin pitched out of the inning unscathed on an infield pop, a force at the plate and a grounder to first. The best chance came on the first out, when Dustin Garneau popped to second base on a 2-0 pitch.
"We couldn't cash in," Rockies manager Bud Black said. "Dustin got a good pitch to hit, just got underneath it."

Obstruction of justice: The D-backs thought they had first and third with one out in the 10th, but the umpires saw if differently. On David Peralta's slow grounder through the right side, second baseman DJ LeMahieu ran into base runner A.J. Pollock as he headed toward second and around to third base. After a protest by Black, the four umpires gathered and called Pollock out for interference.
"As far as the play is concerned, I'm not saying it's easy to be an umpire," Pollock said. "They have a lot of stuff they have to do. Obviously, I didn't agree with the call. They have the final say. We're always trying to get better. Hopefully, they'll take a peek at it. We'll see."

D-backs pitchers struck out 17 on Sunday, extending their National League record to seven games in a row of 11 or more. That's one short of Cleveland's Major League record set from Sept. 14-23, 2014.
UPON REVIEW
Rockies shortstop Trevor Story nearly made the defensive play of the game in the 13th. He fielded Drury's chopper behind second base, whirled and threw to first. The call, that Drury beat the throw, stood after a challenge from the Rockies.

MARQUEZ HOT ON A NICE, WARM DAY
Marquez gave up eight runs in four innings at home against the Nationals in his last start, which was delayed by weather and played in temps that dipped into the 30s. On Sunday, his fastball was spotted properly and he used his curve to end half of his eight strikeouts.
"I commanded the fastball much better, I located it much better, and also the weather played a factor," Marquez said in Spainish, with first-base coach Tony Diaz interpreting. "I was just more consistent with my release point with the curveball. It's always been there for me, but sometimes the consistency, with my release point, it lacks. Today I found it."

Rockies: Rockies manager Bud Black returns to Petco Park, where he managed the Padres 2007-15 on Tuesday night at 8:10 MT. Righty Tyler Chatwood (2-3, 4.88 ERA) will start against Padres righty Trevor Cahill (1-2, 4.50).
D-backs: Arizona hits the road for a six-game road trip to Washington and Colorado with the first game of the Nationals series on Tuesday night at 4:05 p.m. PT. Taijuan Walker, coming off this past Thursday's four-hit, two-run, eight-inning win over the Padres, is slated to get the start.
