PHOENIX -- The Arizona Diamondbacks today dedicated Randy Johnson Hall of Fame Field and D-backs Legends Field in Payson, the 37th and 38th "Diamonds Back" Fields, presented by APS.
D-backs and Payson officials were on hand at the dedication ceremony, including Randy Johnson, Luis Gonzalez, D-backs Play-by-Play Announcer Steve Berthiaume, Arizona Public Service Chairman & CEO Don Brandt and Payson Mayor Kenny Evans.
Johnson was the first Arizona Diamondbacks player to be inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 2015 and shortly thereafter, became the second D-backs player to have his uniform number (No. 51) retired at Chase Field. A five-time Cy Young Award winner, including four with the D-backs, Johnson ranks first among left-handers and second on the all-time Major League strikeout list with 4,875. The 10-time All-Star won 303 games in his career, including a perfect game, and holds nearly every major career pitching record in D-backs franchise history. In 2001, he was named the co-MVP of the D-backs' World Series Championship.
Both Randy Johnson Hall of Fame Field and D-backs Legends Field are located at Rumsey Park, 400 N. McLane Rd., Payson, Ariz.
Since 2000, the Arizona Diamondbacks Foundation has built or refurbished 38 baseball fields representing a community investment in youth sports programs exceeding $10 million. With support from APS, and charitable contributions from D-backs players, the program has allowed children from across the state to play baseball and softball at quality facilities. The fields generally feature new lights, a branded electronic scoreboard, new fencing and backstops, new irrigation and new grass and dirt with additional support provided by local contractors and businesses.
