SAN DIEGO -- The D-backs thought they had the Padres on the ropes twice Friday night, only to watch San Diego respond each time.
In the end it was the Padres who delivered the knockout blow with Freddy Galvis driving in Javy Guerra with a double in the 15th inning as the D-backs fell, 3-2, at Petco Park.
The D-backs' quest to guarantee a winning record will have to wait at least another day as they remain stuck at 81 wins with two games remaining.
Guerra, who was pinch-hitting, drew a walk to open the 15th against Matt Andriese and he scored when Galvis doubled to the corner in right.
"That seems to be the bug that's bitten us this year," D-backs manager Torey Lovullo said of the late-inning loss.

It looked as if the D-backs might prevail in 12 innings when Nick Ahmed's bases-loaded sacrifice fly to right scored Ketel Marte from third base.
Right-hander Archie Bradley couldn't close things out for the D-backs, however, as he allowed a two-out homer to pinch-hitter Hunter Renfroe in the bottom of the 12th to tie the game.
"Archie's been very effective as of late," Lovullo said. "He's throwing the ball much better than he was several weeks ago. It felt like it was the right situation, he just made one mistake. That's the nature of the beast."

The D-backs grabbed a 1-0 lead in the seventh when Chris Owings led off with an infield single, moved to third on John Ryan Murphy's double and scored on a passed ball.
The lead did not last long, though, as reliever Silvino Bracho's first pitch in the bottom half of the frame was hit over the left-field wall by Jose Pirela.

D-backs starter Patrick Corbin, in what could have been his final start in an Arizona uniform, tossed five shutout innings.
Lovullo had determined before the game that Corbin, who will be a free agent at season's end, would at most pitch five innings to bring his season total to an even 200.
"That seemed to be the magic number for me," Lovullo said. "He hit that 200 inning mark which was a nice, big round number for him. I just explained to him that where he's at in his career and some of the twists and turns that may be taking place, it wasn't worth throwing any more. That was it. That was good for me and he agreed. He had a complete season. He had an outstanding season and I just thought it was time to take him off the mound."

Corbin did not miss a turn this year, starting 33 games while finishing with an 11-7 record to go with a 3.15 ERA. He garnered his second career All-Star Game selection and he struck out 246 batters while walking just 48.
As a result, Corbin figures to be one of the most sought-after pitchers on the free-agent market.
"I think when the season's over we'll definitely look into it more," Corbin said. "I've had a lot of friendships here, so I'm not sure what's going to happen. The D-backs organization will always have a special part of my heart."
ROUGH GO WITH RISP
The D-backs were 0-for-15 with runners in scoring position. It was the most at-bats without a hit in those situations in franchise history.
"I thought, offensively, today we left some runners on base in some key situations," Lovullo said. "I thought we could have scored a couple of more to push that lead into a different category."

Corbin became the eighth pitcher in Major League history and the fourth in the National League to throw 200-plus innings and not allow an unearned run. Zack Greinke finished the year with 207 2/3 innings, marking the first time the D-backs have had two pitchers reach the 200-inning mark in the same season since Corbin and Wade Miley did so in 2013.

After tying the game at one in the seventh inning, the Padres had a good chance to extend their rally. Travis Jankowski, the team's leader in stolen bases, followed Pirela's homer with a single. He tried to swipe second, but was tagged out. The Padres challenged, and the call would stand for the second out of the inning.

The D-backs continue their series with the Padres on Saturday at 5:40 p.m. MST at Petco Park, with Zack Godley (14-11, 4.75 ERA) on the mound. Godley has lost his last four starts and is looking for his first win since Aug. 29, when he beat the Giants at AT&T Park. Godley is 0-3 with a 6.55 ERA in his career at Petco Park. The Padres will counter with right-hander Jacob Nix (2-4, 6.81 ERA).
