Goldschmidt in need of late All-Star push

First-place Votto widens gap for first-base spot in latest ballot release

NEW YORK -- Paul Goldschmidt has lost some ground in the vote totals for the All-Star Game, which means D-backs fans have their work cut out for them if they want to see their hometown hero start at first base in the All-Star Game later this month.

In the latest voting released by Major League Baseball on Tuesday, Votto has 3,622,608 votes to 3,035,114 for Goldschmidt, a deficit of 587,494.

In last week's results, Goldschmidt trailed by 406,927 votes.

Catcher Miguel Montero moved from fourth to fifth place among catchers with 997,791 votes, well behind Yadier Molina, who leads with 5,093,645.

The D-backs have not had a position player start an All-Star Game since Luis Gonzalez did in 2001.

Fans can cast their votes for starters at MLB.com and all 30 club sites -- online or via a mobile device -- using the 2013 All-Star Game MLB.com Ballot until Thursday at 9:59 p.m. MST.
