J.D. earns NL POM honors for September

October 2nd, 2017

The D-backs can count the league's hottest hitter among their ranks as they prepare for the National League Wild Card Game, as Arizona slugger J.D. Martinez has won the NL Player of the Month Award for September.
Martinez's September will likely go down as the biggest monthly power surge in D-backs history. He shattered Luis Gonzalez's club record of 13 homers in a single month (April 2001) with 16 big flies, a mark that led the Majors in September.
Martinez also topped the MLB leaderboards with 36 RBIs, a .950 slugging percentage and a 1.382 OPS.
Easily the highlight of Martinez's September was when he became the 18th player in MLB history to hit four homers in a game, accomplished against the Dodgers on Sept. 4.

Acquired from the Tigers at the non-waiver Trade Deadline for three prospects, Martinez has been looking like the best Deadline acquisition in baseball. Since coming to Arizona, Martinez has posted a .302/.366/.741 line with 29 homers in 62 games. He will be a free agent after this season.

This is the first time Martinez has won a Player of the Month Award in his career, though he has won Player of the Week six times. Two of those, not surprisingly, came this September.
