KANSAS CITY -- Robbie Ray got the work he needed to get in as did catcher Jeff Mathis, but it wasn't all good news Sunday afternoon as the D-backs wrapped up the regular season with a 14-2 win over the Royals at Kauffman Stadium.

Shortstop Ketel Marte, who has played a key role for the team with both Chris Owings and Nick Ahmed hurt, was forced to leave the game in the sixth inning when he experienced tightness in his left hamstring while beating out an infield hit.
"He's OK," D-backs manager Torey Lovullo said. "I just had a chance to speak with the medical staff and they said he'll be day to day and nothing to be totally alarmed about at this point, but we'll re-evaluate him [Monday]."
Rey Fuentes, who is a candidate to make the Wild Card Game roster when the D-backs face the Rockies on Wednesday, as a backup outfielder, did not play Sunday and Lovullo said it was due to some back tightness.
Fellow outfielder David Peralta, who left Saturday night's game with neck and back stiffness, was still feeling some discomfort Sunday and was also held out of the lineup.
Lovullo said that both players could have played if necessary.
Ray started and threw 1 2/3 innings so he would be sharp in case he is needed out of the bullpen in Wednesday's Wild Card Game. He threw 23 pitches and said after the game that he felt great.
"It was to go out there and get my work in," Ray said. "I felt like I accomplished what I needed to. That was like throwing a bullpen [session] today."
Mathis, who has been out since Aug. 21 with a fractured hand, caught five innings Saturday and three more innings on Sunday.
"I thought there would be some soreness from catching yesterday, but he had no issues there," Lovullo said. "I wanted him to catch at least three innings which he did and got an at-bat. I think we're setting ourselves up for a couple of good days of work and being ready for Wednesday."
Reliever Jimmie Sherfy, who has been battling tightness in his triceps, played catch Sunday morning. He is scheduled to throw a bullpen session Monday.
Louvllo had said he wanted to see Sherfy pitch in a game if he was going to feel comfortable putting him on the Wild Card Game roster. It would seem the only option would be an instructional league game Tuesday, but that would mean he would be pitching in back-to-back days if he's needed Wednesday. More likely is that he would be available if the team advanced to the Division Series.
