D-backs lose replay challenge in ninth vs. Royals

PHOENIX -- D-backs manager Kirk Gibson lost a replay challenge in the top of the ninth inning against the Royals on Thursday night.

With runners on first and second, a ground ball from Nori Aoki bounced off shortstop Didi Gregorius' glove. Gregorius tried to throw out Jeremy Guthrie, who was trying to advance from first, at third. Rookie Jake Lamb applied the tag too late, and the runner was called safe.

After a short review, the call on the field stood.

The call did not end up hurting the D-backs. Even though a run scored on the play, widening the Royals' lead to 6-2, the run would have counted regardless of the call. Pitcher Eury De La Rosa forced the next batter, Omar Infante to ground out and end the inning.

Gibson is 14-for-28 on reviews this season.
