D-backs place Owings on 15-day disabled list, select Ahmed from Triple-A Reno

SAN DIEGO - The Arizona Diamondbacks (@Dbacks) placed infielder Chris Owings on the 15-day disabled list with a left shoulder strain (retro to June 26), selected the contract of infielder Nick Ahmed (@NickAhmed_) from Triple-A Reno and transferred infielder Eric Chavez to the 60-day disabled list, as announced by D-backs' Executive Vice President & General Manager Kevin Towers.

Owings, 22, is hitting .277 (66-for-238) with 15 doubles, 5 triples, 6 homers and 21 in 72 games with 61 games at shortstop. Among NL rookies, ranks first in triples (5) and OPS (.771), second in games (72), average (.277), hits (66), doubles (15), homers (6) and slugging percentage (.458), third in RBI (21) and on-base percentage (.313) and fourth in walks (12).

Ahmed, 24, will wear No. 13 in his first Major League stint. He entered this season ranked by MLB.com as the D-backs' No. 11 Prospect and was cited as possessing the Best Infield Arm in the system. Last season at Double-A Mobile, he won the 2013 Minor League Rawlings ® Gold Glove Award as the top defensive shortstop.

Ahmed played most recently for the Aces last night, going 1-for-5 at Albuquerque. He was in the midst of a 12-game hitting streak during which he hit .362 (21-for-58) with 6 doubles, 1 homer and 8 RBI. In 79 games for the Aces, he hit .324 (97-for-299) with 20 doubles, 3 triples, 2 homers, 36 RBI, .390 on-base and .431 slugging percentages and .822 OPS. He appeared defensively at shortstop for 66 games and second base for 14 games.

Ahmed was acquired from the Braves along with infielder/outfielder Martin Prado, right-handed pitchers Randall Delgado and Zeke Spruill and infielder Brandon Drury on January 24, 2013, for outfielder Justin Upton and infielder Chris Johnson. Ahmed was the Braves' second-round selection in the 2011 First-Year Player Draft out of the University of Connecticut.

Chavez, 36, was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a sprained left knee on June 9. He is hitting .246 (17-for-69) with 3 doubles, 1 triple, 3 home runs and 8 RBI in 43 games for the D-backs.

The D-backs 40-man roster is now at 40.
