D-backs recall A.J. Schugel from Reno; place Gerald Laird on disabled list

PHOENIX - The Arizona Diamondbacks recalled right-handed pitcher A.J. Schugel from Triple-A Reno and placed catcher Gerald Laird on the 15-day disabled list with lower back spasms (retro to April 9), as announced by D-backs Sr. Vice President & General Manager Dave Stewart.

Schugel, 25, went 6-4 with a 3.47 ERA (57 ER in 147.2 IP) in 26 starts with Double-A Mobile in 2014. He led all full-season D-backs Minor League pitchers in ERA, and was named to the Southern League midseason All-Star Team.

Schugel, who will wear No. 35 when he makes his Major League debut, was acquired from the Los Angeles Angels, along with Mark Trumbo, as part of a 3-team trade with the Chicago White Sox on Dec. 10, 2013. He was originally drafted by the Angels in the 25th round in the 2010 draft.

Laird, 35, made his D-backs debut on April 8 vs. Giants. He signed with the D-backs as a Minor League free agent on Feb. 2.
