D-backs bolster 'pen depth with Sherfy

September 2nd, 2017

DENVER -- The D-backs further expanded their roster Saturday, calling up right-handed pitcher from Triple-A Reno. The D-backs previously called up five players Friday, giving them 31 players on the active roster for Saturday's middle game of the three-game set with the Rockies.
"It was something we had been talking about," manager Torey Lovullo said. "We made the call to see if he was still available, and we made it happen."
Sherfy made his big league debut last month and has pitched two innings for the D-backs in two relief appearances. He debuted against the Twins on Aug. 20 and earned his first career win the next night against the Mets.
"He deserves this," Lovullo said. "I know it's only been a couple innings, but he's come in and he's executed game plans. He's got the ability to go out and get big outs, and he's proven that."
Sherfy, 25, was 2-1 with 20 saves as Reno's closer, posting a 3.32 ERA with 62 strikeouts in 49 innings, for an 11.2 strikeouts-per-nine-innings-pitched ratio. He held right-handers to a .121 average (12-for-99) at Triple-A. A 10th-round pick in the 2013 Draft, he's spent five years in the D-backs' system and has notched 66 saves in the Minors, though Lovullo doesn't expect him to see much late-inning action in September.
"He's not going to be in the back end of games," Lovullo said. "We have our guys that we feel very comfortable with. But I know there's going to be a need for him at different times, and we won't be afraid to use him."
On Friday, the D-backs called up catcher John Ryan Murphy, outfielder/infielder , and right-handed relievers , , and , with all but Shipley seeing action in the 9-5 win over the Rockies.
