PHOENIX -- After another injury struck the D-backs on Tuesday, the club announced on Wednesday that it had recalled infielder Ketel Marte from Triple-A Reno.

The move came in response to shortstop Nick Ahmed being placed on the 10-day disabled list with a fractured right hand. Ahmed was hit in the hand with a pitch by St. Louis pitcher Trevor Rosenthal during the eighth inning of Arizona's 6-5 win on Tuesday.

PHOENIX -- After another injury struck the D-backs on Tuesday, the club announced on Wednesday that it had recalled infielder Ketel Marte from Triple-A Reno.

"Nick Ahmed had a procedure where he had three pins placed into his hand that will stabilize everything and help this healing process," Arizona manager Torey Lovullo said. "A very unfortunate moment for Nick -- he was having a tremendous year and helping team in a lot of different ways.

"We're all pretty bummed by this news, but we know that he's on the road to recovery. It's gonna be a 6-8 week process; the diagnosis is right now, in six weeks we'll begin baseball activities and hopefully two weeks of that activity will have him ready."

Before his injury, Ahmed was hitting .251 with six homers and .a 298 on-base percentage.

In Marte, Arizona adds one of the most productive bats in the Minors. The 23-year old leads the Minor Leagues in hits (105) and has posted a .338 batting average in 70 games at Triple-A. During two different big league stints with Seattle in 2015 and 2016, Marte hit a combined .267 in 176 games.

"I thank them for giving me the opportunity to be here," Marte said. "I was here during Spring Training and they sent me back to Triple-A and like I said at the time, when I go there I'm just going to focus on doing my job 100 percent and try to come back here real quick. Now that I'm here, I feel so excited to be here again."

Lovullo said Marte will fill a similar role to the one Ahmed did; spelling Arizona's middle infielders. He gives the D-backs the versatility of another switch-hitter off the bench, and could also see time in the outfield and at third base.

"Chris Owings is gonna be our starting shortstop, as he has been, but he's gonna need days off, as is Brandon Drury," Lovullo said. "We're gonna fill in there with him backing up those guys, but there's gonna be times where we might ask him to play the outfield in a double switch or a key moment late in the game. And we're gonna see how he feels at third base. He's here to backup the guys and get several starts along the way."

Pollack, Tomas proceed with rehab assignments

Both A.J. Pollock and Yasmany Tomas are in the midst of rehab assignments, Lovullo said on Wednesday.

Tomas went 0-for-2 while playing five innings in left field for the AZL D-backs against the Angels' affiliate. He will have a scheduled day off on Wednesday.

"My conversation with him was that he felt no pain and that the at bats were good," Lovullo said. "That's what we're looking for."

Pollack went 1-for-4 and doubled while batting leadoff and playing six innings in center field for Reno on Tuesday in his second rehab start. Lovullo still isn't sure whether Pollack or Tomas could return for Arizona's weekend series with Colorado.

"I wannt to be optimistic, and I wanna shoot as high as I can," Lovullo said. "But we have to process the information as we're getting it day by day. I don't wanna predict when it's gonna happen or when they're going to be available. But we want it to be as soon as possible."
