D-backs recall pitcher Sam Demel from Triple-A Reno

PHOENIX — The Arizona Diamondbacks announced they have recalled right-handed pitcher Sam Demel from Triple-A Reno, according to D-backs’ Executive Vice President & General Manager Kevin Towers.

Demel, 26, was 1-4 with a 4.60 ERA (30 ER in 58.2 IP), 1 save and 66 strikeouts in 51 relief appearances with the Aces in 2012. He averaged 10.13 strikeouts per 9.0 IP with Reno and posted a 2.79 ERA (3 ER in 9.2 IP) with 14 strikeouts in August.

The 6-foot-0, 205-pounder went 2-2 with a 4.21 ERA (12 ER in 25.2 IP) in 34 games with the D-backs in 2011 and is 4-3 with a 4.88 ERA (34 ER in 62.2 IP) in 71 career games overs 2 seasons with Arizona (2010-11).

Demel, who will wear No. 38, was acquired from the A’s on June 15, 2010 in exchange for outfielder Conor Jackson.
