ATLANTA -- D-backs left-hander Robbie Ray found himself looking around the National League clubhouse at the All-Star Game and just taking it all in.
"Being in that clubhouse with all those guys, a lot of big-name guys, it was humbling, it was exciting and I enjoyed every minute of it," Ray said. "I don't even know if there's a word to describe it, really. It was just really, really awesome. I just kind of soaked it all in, sat at my locker, looked around and saw all the big-name guys. To be in that room with those guys, it was something special."
The All-Star experience also was special for first baseman Paul Goldschmidt's 2-year-old son, Jake.
"He liked the police escort on the way to the game," Goldschmidt said. "The sirens and the lights, so that might have been his highlight."
D-backs manager Torey Lovullo gave Ray, Goldschmidt and fellow All-Stars Zack Greinke and Jake Lamb a night off Thursday while the rest of the team hit at Sun Trust Field.
"[I] definitely took the last couple of days to just rest and catch up on sleep," Goldschmidt said. "Those couple of days there go really fast and there's a lot going on."
Getting familiar
Rain called an early halt to the D-backs' on-field batting practice Thursday at Sun Trust Park so it was not until batting practice Friday that the team's outfielders got a chance to see how the walls would play.
Outfield coach Dave McKay worked with the defense as it took fungoes off the wall to see if there were any unique caroms.
"I think what Mac asks these guys to do is get out and become familiar with the ballpark and make sure they know the twists and turns," Lovullo said. "It's one of those things where we haven't been here before so we have to make sure we get as comfortable as possible in the amount of time we have."
Injury updates
Right-hander J.J. Hoover, who is on the disabled list with shoulder inflammation, pitched for Class A Kane County on Thursday, his first appearance on a rehab assignment.
When asked if Hoover -- who has Minor League options remaining -- would automatically be added to the roster as soon as he's healthy, Lovullo said, "I don't know that answer. Nothing is imminent and we just want to get him healthy right now at this point."
Reliever Rubby De La Rosa, who is on the DL with shoulder tightness, threw a bullpen session Thursday and will throw in an Arizona League game Saturday.
