GOODYEAR, Ariz. -- The D-backs sent 10 men to the plate and scored six runs in the top of the first inning on their way to a 9-3 victory over the Reds at Goodyear Ballpark on Sunday afternoon.
Cincinnati starter Brandon Finnegan struggled immediately, with the first five Arizona batters reaching safely. Two batters in, Phil Gosselin hit a two-run home run to left field. Finnegan gave up all six first-inning runs, allowing five hits, two walks and a run-scoring wild pitch. He threw 44 pitches in his one inning and then an additional 36 in the bullpen to reach his desired pitch-count of 80.
"It was one of those days where I just didn't have anything," said Finnegan, who still appears a strong candidate to make the Reds' rotation. "I didn't know where any of my pitches were going today. I couldn't fix it on the mound. All the good pitches I threw, they were hit."
Arizona's No. 2 starter, Shelby Miller, labored in the three-run bottom of the first, even though all of those runs were unearned after leadoff batter Billy Hamilton bunted and reached on the pitcher's two-base throwing error. Devin Mesoraco's two-run double to left field made it a three-run game.
Miller, who last pitched in a camp game on a team off-day on Tuesday, did not allow another run as he completed five innings with three hits, three walks and six strikeouts.
"Just rushing a little bit early," Miller said. "I felt like throughout the day, I got a little stronger."
Gosselin notched a third RBI in the fourth inning with a sacrifice fly. Yasmany Tomas was 2-for-4 with an RBI double in the first inning to leave his spring average at .417, and D-backs leadoff hitter Jean Segura went 3-for-4 as his average reached .571.
Following Finnegan's early departure, Reds reliever A.J. Morris gave up one run and three hits over 2 1/3 innings. Ryan Mattheus added 2 2/3 scoreless innings with two hits and two strikeouts.
Shortstop Domingo Leyba hit a sac fly in the seventh inning and first baseman Kyle Jensen chipped in an RBI single in the ninth for the D-backs' final run.
D-backs Up Next: Left-hander Patrick Corbin will get the start for Arizona on Monday night when the club plays host to Milwaukee at Salt River Fields at 6:40 p.m. MST. D-backs closer Brad Ziegler is also scheduled to see action. This is club's first look at the Brewers this spring.
Reds Up Next:Joey Votto and Jay Bruce will be part of the Reds' contingent heading to Peoria on Monday when they face the Padres at 10:05 p.m. ET. Getting the start on the mound will be lefty prospect Cody Reed, who has not allowed a run over his last three games (seven innings).
