D-backs select Holmberg from Double-A Mobile, designate Kubel for assignment

PHOENIX - The Arizona Diamondbacks (@Dbacks) have selected left-handed pitcher David Holmberg (@David_Holmberg) from Double-A Mobile and designated outfielder Jason Kubel for assignment, according to D-backs' Executive Vice President & General Manager Kevin Towers.

Holmberg, 22, will make his Major League debut tonight vs. the San Diego Padres and wear No. 33. He entered the season ranked as the D-backs No. 6 prospect by Baseball America and No. 8 by MLB.com. This season, he was 5-7 with a 2.66 ERA (45 ER in 152.1 IP) in 25 starts for the BayBears while holding opponents to a .233 average with 47 walks and 115 strikeouts. He held lefties to a .216 average while righties hit just .237.

Among Southern League leaders, he ranked second in innings (152.1) and fewest baserunners per 9.0 innings (10.87), tied for second in WHIP (1.16) and fourth in ERA (2.66).

In his last 6 starts for Mobile since the All-Star Break, he has posted a 1.59 ERA, holding opponents to 6 runs in 34.0 innings, and .207 opponents average with 14 walks and 31 strikeouts.

He was acquired along with right-handed pitcher Daniel Hudson from the Chicago White Sox on July 30, 2010 in exchange for right-handed pitcher Edwin Jackson. Holmberg was the White Sox's second-round selection in the 2009 First-Year Player Draft out of Port Charlotte (Fla.) High School.

Kubel, 31, hit .220 (53-for-241) with 8 doubles, 1 triple, 5 home runs and 32 RBI in 89 games for the D-backs this season. Over the last two seasons with the D-backs, he hit .242 (181-for-747) with 38 doubles, 5 triples, 35 home runs and 122 RBI in 230 games.
