DENVER -- Shelby Miller will need to go back and look at the video to determine exactly why he surrendered seven runs on 11 hits as the Rockies beat the D-backs, 11-6, on Saturday afternoon at Coors Field. But there was one thing that was clear to him.
"Personally, I didn't pitch very good at all," Miller said.
That was somewhat surprising given how sharp he looked last time out against the Phillies when he allowed just one run in 6 2/3 innings.
"You know it was kind of mixed," D-backs manager Chip Hale said of Miller's outing. "He had his innings where he really mowed and his pitch count was manageable, which was important today because we had to get him deep into the game."
Indeed, after giving up a leadoff homer to Charlie Blackmon to start the first, Miller was able to retire the side easily in the second and third innings.

But that changed in the fourth when the Rockies scored three runs on four hits.
"I felt like we made pitches at times in the second and third innings, we had some quick innings there," Miller said. "Then just kind of the fourth got away from us a little bit."
Hale also pinned some of the blame for the fourth on the defense.
With a runner on first, Brandon Barnes hit a ball that second baseman Jean Segura could not handle. While the official scorer gave Barnes a hit on the play, Hale thought it should have been an inning-ending double play.
When Tony Wolters followed with a two-run double, the Rockies made the D-backs pay.

"Obviously, the inability to turn the double play the one inning hurt Shelby a lot," Hale said.
Miller usually reviews video of his starts the day after, so he will have a better idea on Sunday why things seemed to get away from him and what he needs to do to be better his next time out.
"I just know we had a little long inning there and just kind of got into some jams and got into some trouble and couldn't really get out of it," Miller said of the fourth. "They just got a lot of timely hits. I'll watch video tomorrow and see what I was doing wrong. I feel like I can still take a lot of positives out of it. I feel like I made a lot of good pitches at times. I threw a lot of fastballs in to righties that were good and cutter was pretty good today so that was a plus."
