GLENDALE, Ariz. -- With injuries to outfielders Yasmany Tomas and A.J. Pollock, the D-backs are starting to think about players who might be able to move to the outfield if needed.
"Those guys getting nicked up and not able to play makes you start thinking out of the box," D-backs manager Chip Hale said. "What if this happened during the season and we started to get thin? Do we need to start giving guys who don't have much experience in the outfield or any experience in the outfield, do we need to stick them out there and see how they look?"
O'Brien hits 2 homers, drives in 5 runs
The D-backs expect both Tomas and Pollock back in the next week, but it's possible they could give Phil Gosselin some more time on the corners or even experiment with the hot-hitting Brandon Drury.
Drury is in the thick of the race to start at either second or third base.
"Obviously, the way he's swinging the bat, you're going to have to try to find at-bats for him somewhere," Hale said. "That's another name."
Ray pitches well again
Left-hander Robbie Ray entered camp as the favorite to win the No. 5 spot in the rotation based on his performance last year, and through three starts this spring, he has done nothing to hurt his chances.

Ray allowed a pair of runs in 4 2/3 innings against the White Sox on Sunday.
"I'm not the decision-maker on that, so I couldn't give you an answer," Ray said, when asked about where he thought he stood in the competition with Zack Godley, Archie Bradley and Tyler Wagner. "But I feel very comfortable with where I'm at."

Herrmann scratched
Catcher Chris Herrmann was scratched from Sunday's lineup with hip soreness. Hale said that Herrmann had been battling the injury for about a week now and could play if this were the regular season.
