D-backs to ease off just a bit in preparations

Changes expected to help players recover before final days of camp

March 13th, 2016

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- With 10 days of Spring Training games in the books and a little more than three weeks left until Opening Day, the D-backs are making some changes in their workout schedule.
"We have a three-phase Spring Training," D-backs manager Chip Hale said. "This middle part we're going to back off a little bit of our work and some of the drills. We'll give them a little bit of a break and try to get their bodies revived."
La Russa: Competition enhances camp
Both chief baseball officer Tony La Russa and Hale have been pleased with the way the team has hustled this spring and approached even the mundane drills, and it appears to be paying off.
"We have been playing so well in pretty much all phases of the game," Hale said.
Bracho back
Right-hander Silvino Bracho, who is competing for the final bullpen spot, finally got into a Cactus League game Saturday after being slowed by a groin injury early in camp.
Bracho struck out two and allowed a hit in the sixth inning of the D-backs' 3-0 victory over the Royals.

Drury, Bradley stay strong vs. Giants
Too soon
Hale was not about to handicap the race for the No. 5 spot in the rotation between Robbie Ray, Archie Bradley, Tyler Wagner and Zack Godley.
"They're all throwing the ball fairly well," he said. "To rank them right now is tough. Let's get stretched out to four, five innings and see what they look like."
Injury updates
Third baseman Yasmany Tomas (left knee) took some flips in the cage Saturday. Hale said he could return to the lineup possibly by Thursday.
Meanwhile, outfielder A.J. Pollock (right elbow) is more likely to return next weekend, according to Hale.
