D-backs to make decision on coaching staff
SAN DIEGO -- D-backs general manager Kevin Towers said the fate of the team's coaching staff will be resolved within a few days of the conclusion of the regular season.
The entire coaching staff -- Matt Williams (third base), Steve Sax (first base), Don Baylor (hitting), Turner Ward (asst. hitting), Charles Nagy (pitching coach), Alan Trammell (bench) and Glenn Sherlock (bullpen) -- have contracts that will expire at the end of October.
"We're not going to let this thing drag on long," Towers said.
Towers wants to meet Monday with manager Kirk Gibson, team president Derrick Hall and managing general partner Ken Kendrick to get their input as well.
"What's the strengths of our staff?" Towers said. "What's the weaknesses of our staff? Those will be things we talk about after the season. Do we have the right coaches to get the most out of those players or not?"
The D-backs will finish around the .500 mark for the second straight season after winning the National League West in 2011.
"I don't think anybody is looking to point a finger to our club finishing around .500 because of our coaching staff," Towers said. "What you have to do is look at your product, the people that you have and make sure that you have the right people that are leading that product and coaching that product that's going to get the most out of them. Those are questions that Gibby and I need to talk about, as well as Derrick and Ken."
