D-backs washed out again in Colorado

DENVER -- For the second straight day, the D-backs returned to their Denver hotel from Coors Field without having played a baseball game, as Tuesday night's contest with the Rockies was postponed due to rain

Unlike Monday, when there was a 2-hour and 30-minute delay before the postponement, Tuesday's game was called more than an hour before first pitch.

The two teams will play a doubleheader Wednesday beginning at noon MST. There will be approximately 30 minutes between the first and second games. The two teams will have to play another doubleheader during one of Arizona's next two trips to Denver, with the most likely date being Sept. 1.

Josh Collmenter, who was scheduled to start Monday, then Tuesday, will now get the ball in Game 1 on Wednesday. Robbie Ray will be called up from Triple-A Reno to start the second game Wednesday.

Ray, who initially was going to be called up to start Tuesday's game, will be designated the team's 26th man on Wednesday, as teams get to add an extra player for doubleheaders.

It is just the second time in franchise history that the D-backs have had back-to-back games postponed due to weather. The only other time was May 17-18, 2009, at Atlanta and Florida, respectively.

"Not playing two days is tough during the season," D-backs manager Chip Hale said. "I think it's hard. Hopefully we can have a batting practice and all that, have a regular day [Wednesday]. That'd be nice."

Ray was going to be promoted to start Tuesday's game in place of the injured Archie Bradley, so the rainouts mean that the team will now need to find a starter for Sunday's game.

"We have a lot of different options that we can go with, and we'll internally discuss them all," said Hale. "That's the problem that this causes. We'll talk about it and see where we go with it."
