Jennings, Marlins meet to discuss role

MIAMI -- Dan Jennings met with upper management on Thursday at Marlins Park. While no specifics were announced, the Marlins intend to retain Jennings as manager, at least for now.

The Marlins are in the process of making widespread changes throughout the organization. And indications are Jennings will eventually transition from the dugout back to general manager.

Jennings arrived at Marlins Park about 11 a.m. ET to meet with president of baseball operations Michael Hill, team president David Samson and owner Jeffrey Loria.

There were reports Jennings could have immediately vacated his manager role to return to the front office.

Fresh off sweeping a three-game series against the Braves at Turner Field, the Marlins were off on Thursday before taking on the Mets at home on Friday.

Jennings replaced Mike Redmond as manager on May 18, and there was an understanding at the time that if being in the dugout wasn't working that he could go back to the front office.

The Marlins are a disappointing 55-79, and Loria is evaluating every level of the organization. There is a possibility roles could be changed in the front office. It's not known whether Jennings was presented with a front-office option that he is currently thinking about.

It's still unknown whether Jennings will manage until the end of the season. For next year, the team is expected to search for a manager with experience.

Jennings, under contract through 2018, also may have options in other organizations. The Mariners, Phillies, Orioles and Angels are possibilities. In the past, the Marlins have denied teams permission to talk with Jennings.
