Farquhar optioned by Mariners

SEATTLE -- Reliever Danny Farquhar was optioned to Triple-A Tacoma after Sunday's 10-3 loss to the Angels, creating an opening in the bullpen that will be filled before the team resumes play after the All-Star break on Friday in New York.

Farquhar gave up two hits with two strikeouts in 1 2/3 innings to the Angels, lowering his ERA to 6.23 in 25 appearances this season. He was recalled from Tacoma on Thursday to replace rookie Mayckol Guaipe, but allowed six hits -- including two home runs -- and two runs in four innings.

The Mariners likely will recall veteran right-hander Tom Wilhelmsen, who was optioned to Tacoma on July 4 and will be eligible to return on Friday.

Wilhelmsen threw a scoreless eighth in Tacoma's 5-4 loss at Reno on Sunday and hasn't allowed a run in four innings over four appearances at Triple-A, with three hits, two walks and two strikeouts. Wilhelmsen, 31, has a 4.68 ERA in 22 appearances with the Mariners this season, but was one of their top relievers a year ago with a 2.27 mark in 57 outings.
